Safe Driving Tips For The Rain

Safe Driving Tips For The Rain
ELIZABETH CITY, NC- April showers bring May flowers, but it looks like they're also bringing more showers. You probably already exercise extra caution when you're driving in the rain, but did you know that thousands of accidents each year are due to rainy conditions? That's because wet roadways can make for hazardous driving conditions. So keep our Safe Driving Tips For The Rain in mind next time thunderstorms are in the forecast!

Safe Driving Tips For The Rain:
-First and foremost, slow down. When it rains, a film of water forms on the road which can cause tires to lose traction. It's especially important to slow down after a long dry spell, since oil and grease build up on the road which then cause extremely slick roadways when it rains. In addition, rain can reduce your perception so it's important to be more alert. But don't forget to allow yourself more time so that you don't end up rushing.

-When you need to slow down try to brake earlier and with less force than normal which will allow a greater stopping distance between you and the car in front of you. Other drivers will then also have more time to realize you are slowing down.

-When it comes to puddles, it is best to avoid them since you don't know what's under them. Most roads are crowned, so try to stay towards the middle of the road to avoid puddles close to the shoulder. If you see a large puddle ahead, try to drive around it or find another route. It's impossible to know how deep the puddle may be or if there is anything underneath like a large pothole. You don't want to drive through it since you could cause damage to the internal electrical system if water splashes into your engine compartment.

-Don't use your vehicle's cruise control if it's raining or the roads are wet. If you start to hydroplane, cruise control can actually cause your vehicle to accelerate when you lose traction. If you do start to hydroplane, the best thing to do is slowly release the gas pedal while keeping the wheel straight. Try to avoid braking or turning the wheel if you hydroplane since that can cause you to lose control.

-At the first sign of a sprinkle, turn on your headlights. Even if it's not dark out, your lights will help you to see the road better and will help other drivers see you better. But while your headlights can help you see better, if it's raining so hard that it's difficult for you to see, pull over and wait it out.
